Shrine Board to organise four mega events

KATRA: The second meeting of the Governing Council of the Shrine Board’s Sports Complex, Katra, was held at Spiritual Growth Centre here which took a number of important decisions for identifying sporting talent, organising specialised coaching camps and arranging mega sports events at the sports complex in the coming months to promote sports and games in the area.
Dr. Ashok Bhan, Member of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Sports Complex, chaired the meeting.
Ajeet Kumar Sahu, CEO, and Dr. Piyush Singla, Additional CEO, attended the meeting.
Prominent sportspersons to include Ashwani Nachappa, former International Athlete (Arjuna Awardee); Sanjeeva Singh, former International Archer (Arjuna/ Dronacharya Awardee); Samaresh Jung, International Shooter (Arjuna Awardee); Krupali Singh, National Gymnastics Coach (Arjuna Awardee); Kuldeep Handoo, eminent Wushu player and National Coach; and Ashok Kumar, Director Sports of the Shrine Board, all of whom are members of the Governing Council, participated in the deliberations.
Ranjit Kalra, Member, J and K State Sports Council, attended the meeting as a Special Invitee.
Dr. Bhan dwelt on the aims and objectives of setting up of the Sports Complex, Katra, and the mandate of the Governing Council.
He observed that we should identify the talent in the identified key sports and other disciplines and train and groom them so that they could excel and bring laurels in sports events held at various levels. Reviewing the annual calendar of sports activities for the next financial year, the Governing Council decided to organise various mega sports events at Katra, which include a national level Marathon Race, national level Wushu championship, national level Kabaddi championship and National/North Zone level Archery Championship. Renowned national and international level marathon runners will be invited to the marathon event, he said.
The Governing Council decided to organise a 4-week summer coaching camp for boys and girls of 8-14 years of age in various games in June-July this year. Besides, the Governing Council also decided to conduct a one-week Self Defence Training programme for 11th and 12th class girl students of Katra and adjoining areas.
The Governing Council also decided to prepare a database of sportspersons, physical education teachers and others associated with sports in the area and make arrangements for their specialised trainings in various disciplines as part of Training of Trainers (ToT) programme so that the sports activities get a major boost in the area.
The Governing Council members also visited Sports Complex and suggested organising summer training camps in various sports in this Complex in view of the excellent weather conditions in the area. They lauded the Shrine Board for putting in place excellent facilities at the Sports Complex and emphasised the need for making the best possible use of the state-of-the-art facilities available.
