Seminar on Agriculture Terminology in Dogri begins at SKUAST-J

JAMMU: Two days seminar on use of Technical Terminology of Agriculture in Dogri organised by Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) commenced here at Chatha on Wednesday. The seminar is being sponsored by the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Human Resource Development, (Department of Higher Education) Government of India, New Delhi. The seminar is being organized in context with process of compilation of Fundamental Glossary of Agriculture in Dogri. Prof. P. K. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu was the Chief Guest. He asserted that the main objective of such seminars is to preserve and promote regional and national languages. He appreciated the role of MHRD and the commission for taking such an initiative. He emphasised that local language usually play vital role in creating more innovative ideas. This knowledge needs to be preserved in coming times.
Dr D.P Abrol, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture explained that to make understand technical terms of agriculture in Dogri language such programmes are very important.
Dr. Shailender Singh, Assistant Director from the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, MHRD, New Delhi informed that the Commission has is in the process of finalising Fundamental Glossary of Agriculture in English-Hindi-Dogri to facilitate agricultural scientists and farmers, besides Dogri speaking masses of the State fulfilling the long pending public demand. Singh informed that the glossary of agriculture in Dogri will soon be a reality. He informed the gathering that about 2,700 words have been coined and translated in Dogri.
The prominent speakers would include O. P. Sharma ‘Vidyarathi’, (Director, Ecology and Environment, J&K Govt. and Sahitaya Academy awardee), Joginder Chhatrapal (eminent Dogri writer and Sahitaya Academy awardee), Prof. Yash Pal Sharma (Head, Department of Botany, Jammu University), R.S. Jasrotia, IFS (Retd.), Dr. Sudesh Radotra, Principal Scientist, ICAR.
The participants included scientists from SKUAST-Jammu, field functionaries from the department of agriculture, horticulture and forests, faculty members from University of Jammu and degree colleges experts from outside the State and some eminent writers and linguistic experts of dogri.
Others who attended the inaugural function included Dr. J.P Sharma, Dr TAS Ganai, Dr Deepak Kher and heads of different divisions.
Prof. S. K. Gupta, Local Organizing Secretary of the seminar presented vote of thanks.
