JAMMU: The Border Security Forces have detected a tunnel from Pakistan opening at the Indian side of the border in RS Pura sector of Jammu District.
A senior BSF official said the army troops with the help of ground penetrating radars and other equipments have earlier also found such tunnels emanating from across the LoC and coming several meters inside the Indian territory. Through such tunnels infiltrations are quite rampant.
BSF personnel have discovered an underground tunnel at Allah Mian Kothey area in R S Pura sector of the International Border in Jammu District,” police sources said.
Senior BSF officers have reached the spot to ascertain whether the tunnel could have been dug to facilitate infiltration from across the border.
The BSF, in a statement in Delhi, said the force is already on high alert on western borders and is working proactively to thwart any misadventure by anti-national elements.
After a detailed vulnerability analysis, the sensitive regions have been mapped yet again and special measures are now in place to counter any security threats.
“Efforts are on to check the complete layout and design of the tunnel. Senior officers are camping on the place of detection,” it added.
STATE TIMES correspondent reports that the 30 metre long tunnel was detected by the BSF jawans while clearing the wild growth of grass close to the Zero Line ahead of the barbed wire fencing.
The tunnel was apparently covered with wooden planks under the surface.
According to filed report one of the BSF tractors was stuck in the deep pit in the forward area and when the BSF jawans failed to push the tractor they sensed trouble. After raising alarm several senior officers arrived at the spot and ordered deep digging.
The tunnel was found 10 feet deep (approx) and 2.5 feet wide, 50 metre ahead of the barbed wire fence, BSF official said.
According to BSF, the tunnel started from the Pakistani side and was blocked on our side. It was dead end. It had no exit as they could not complete it further. It came close to the border fencing,” the officer said.
“One person can sit and easily move inside the tunnel which has come up in the vicinity of Allah-Mai-Di-Kothi BoP of ours from Pakistan Post of Afzal,” he said, adding that a probe was on.
