With the increase in the number of vehicles on the road, the chances of road accidents are also increasing. Most of the people have car, bike, scooter in their house. Now, instead of using public transport, people prefer to use their personal transport for travel. Therefore, road traffic is increasing, and it is also polluting our environment. Apart from this, road accidents also increase every year. Road accidents mainly occur due to the negligence of the driver or the person driving the vehicle. Most people riding two wheelers do not wear helmets, which increases the chances of brain injury and death. Therefore, it is mandatory for motorcyclists and scooter riders to wear helmets. Sometimes people do triple riding. According to the law, three persons riding a motorcycle is illegal and unauthorized. But, still people do triple riding, which leads to road accidents. One of the main reasons for road accidents is the high speed. On highways and roads, many drivers drive around 30 to 40 kmph over the speed limit, especially the youth. About one third of road accidents are caused by over speeding. By following proper traffic and road safety rules, many road accidents can be prevented and damage can be minimised. The traffic police can be more strict towards the people to follow the traffic rules. The government should increase the amount of fine for those who break the rules and do not follow the road safety guidelines. Punishment or jail term apart from fine will make people more alert and disciplined to follow traffic rules. Heavier fines should be imposed on those driving without a driving license, using cell phones while driving or motorcyclists without helmets. This will prevent them from making such mistakes in future. The government and the city traffic police should organize public awareness programs to educate citizens about the importance of road safety.
