Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the recent security lapse in Parliament, which has sparked heated debates and disruptions. It is, indeed, fortunate that no harm occurred during this incident on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, the same date when the tragic terrorist attack on Parliament took place in 2001. The dramatic entry and disturbance caused by two individuals in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday have reignited discussions on the security protocols. Notably, a similar security lapse occurred on December 13, 2001, resulting in a large-scale terrorist attack on Parliament, leading to casualties among Central Reserve Police Force officers and unarmed parliamentary staff. The current situation has led to heightened tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. Traditionally, such disagreements involve blaming each other, creating a ruckus at the first opportunity, or raising contentious issues to obstruct the functioning of Parliament. It would be beneficial if the opposition refrains from unnecessary uproar and instead collaborates with the government to suggest constructive measures for enhancing security logistics. It is crucial for the opposition to provide positive suggestions to make the security system foolproof, rather than engaging in disruptive behavior that wastes valuable parliamentary time. Parliament’s time is precious, and any disruption not only hampers the legislative process but also burdens the public with the cost of unproductive sessions. In conclusion, it is urged that both the ruling party and the opposition rise above political differences and work together to address the security concerns in Parliament by fostering a constructive dialogue. That is how we can ensure the safety of our democratic institutions and prevent incidents that could compromise the well-being of our elected representatives and parliamentary staff.
