‘Promoting sports in State top on agenda’

SRINAGAR: Department of Youth Services and Sports on Saturday organised a prize distribution function at Government Higher Secondary School, Shalimar to felicitate school children who showed good performance in just concluded inter school tournaments in Kho-Kho, Kabbadi and Volleyball. Director General, Youth Services and Sports, Jahangir Mir was the Chief Guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director General said that sports is the best co-curricular activity to develop physical, mental and social wellbeing of youth especially students, adding that many new initiatives have been taken to give new heights to the sports activities in the state.
He said annual sports calendar has already been released in which 15 new sports activities have been introduced and activities are going on across the state with large participation of youth.
Mir said that sports are the top most priority of the present government is taking keen interest in the revival of sports and athletic activities in the State. He said four national level games will be played in the state during current year.
DG said that play fields will be developed at block level under centrally sponsored scheme. He said two international standard stadia one each at Srinagar and Jammu will be developed to provide plate form to youth for exploring their talent. Mir also called upon all sports lovers to come forward and participate in different activities of the department.
Later the Director General gave away prizes among the winners, runner ups and participants. He also gave away cheques of Rs.10,000, Rs. 7,000 and Rs.5,000 to first three position holders who have participated in National Games. Director Radio Kashmir and Joint Director YSS also spoke on the occasion.Earlier, District Youth Services officer Srinagar Balbir Singh Bali gave details about the tournament and said that more than 7000 students participated in the inter school tournaments.
