Prohibition: Cong for heavy fine before penal action

Patna:- The Congress, an ally of Nitish Kumar -led Grand Secular Alliance government in Bihar, today said it favoured imposition of multiple penalties before invoking the stricter penal provisions including jail in the event of violation of the state’s liquor law.

“During the all party meeting on prohibition on Tuesday, we had suggested that severe financial penalty should be imposed twice or thrice before invoking the strict penal provisions including jail term in accordance with prohibition law,” state Congress chief Ashok Choudhary said.

Choudhary, who is the state education minister, sought moderation in the provision of jail to all adult members of a family in the event of recovery of liquor bottle.

“People have come up with suggestions to remove the provision of sending all adult members of a family to jail.

Its true that if a son who drinks and does not hear to his father then why the father and others should be sent to jail,” Choudhary, who represented his party in the all-party meet on prohibition, said.

Supporting prohibition, he said state’s economy has been strengthened post prohibition.

“Only 25 per cent of population who drink alcohol are terming the prohibition law as strict, while 75 per cent of people consider that the decision was taken in the interest of the society,” he added.
