Practice yoga to keep diseases at bay, says Milkha Singh

Chandigarh:- Legendary athlete Milkha Singh today asked people, especially youths, to practice yoga in order to keep diseases at bay and stay fit.

The octogenarian ‘Flying Sikh’ will flag off the ‘Yoga Run’ –a mini marathon– tomorrow in New Delhi which is being organised in the run-up to the International Yoga Day (IYD) on June 21.

“I am fit at 88 years of age. I do yoga and also go jogging 2-3 times which has kept me fit and healthy even at this ripe age in which many people keep seeing doctors,” he told PTI here.

He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who would be participating in the main IYD event at the Capitol Complex here on June 21. The event is expected to be attended by around 30,000 people.

“With the efforts of our Prime Minister, yoga got recognition worldwide,” Singh said.

On the mantra to stay fit, he said, “I want to tell people that they should always try to stay calm and speak good things, have control over food by adopting healthy food habits, eat less food and exercise daily. Do yoga and exercises daily even if it is for a few minutes only and results would appear in a few days only.”

He also said youths, many of whom have fallen prey to vices, should practice yoga daily as it helps keep away “negativity”, boosts energy levels and brings “positive thinking”.

The six-kilometre mini-marathon for youths titled ‘Yoga Run for Peace and Unity’ will start from India Gate tomorrow, Singh said.
