JAMMU: Like in Punjab, the use of Chitta-diacetylmorphine, an adulterated drug form of heroin, is increasing manifold over the years. A shocking survey conducted in the recent times has revealed that the districts of Kathua and Samba besides parts of R S Pura in Jammu and Kashmir are becoming dens of Chitta.
The Chitta is easily being smuggled from Pakistan. However, it doesn’t mean that the Chitta is not available in Rajouri, Reasi, Udhampur or any other district but the areas in Kathua, Samba and R S Pura are the leading sellers, importers of Chitta.
A police officer, on assurance of anonymity, said, “At times, we are helpless as these narcotic smugglers or traders are aided and abetted by politicians of different political parties. The kingpins, whenever arrested, manage to get released due to the fact that within minutes of their arrest, telephone calls, particularly from the local politicians keep pouring at the concerned police stations with alibi like the nabbed person is innocent and sincere worker of their respective party”.
Another senior officer, again on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the interference of the politicians that scuttle the efforts of the police in freeing the places from this menace.
Disturbed by the unwarranted interference of the politicians, especially those from the local areas, the people in general and the law enforcing agencies in particular pin many hopes with the honest and straightforward Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to rein in such elements and save Jammu and Kashmir from becoming another Udta Punjab. For this, the politico-narcotic nexus is to be crushed by giving a free hand to the law enforcing agencies to tackle the alarming situation with iron fists.
