Political parties bracing up for stormy budget session

JAMMU: Come New Year 2017 and the State Legislature would witness fire-works, as the opposition parties are gearing up to corner the PDP-BJP alliance government in both, Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
If subject matter of the starred and unstarred questions, submitted by the opposition legislators, is any indication, the alliance government is set to witness the heat.
The opposition parties, especially National Conference would be aiming to widen gap between the alliance partners by exposing the fault-lines during month-long Budget session.
The Congress is also gearing up to take on the ruling dispensation in the House.
According to official sources, majority of questions submitted by the Kashmir based opposition legislators relate to Kashmir unrest and handling of law and order situation by the law enforcing agencies.
The issue of burning down schools and total failure of the State administration in reaching out to local residents would figure high on the agenda of the opposition parties, seeking to extract some replies from the treasury benches. The Jammu based legislators would most likely raise the issue of cross border terrorism and soft approach adopted by the Kashmir based political parties towards them. The proposed compensation to the next of kin of OGW’s is likely to generate heat when the Legislature meets.
In Jammu, the BJP legislators and their conduct would come under scanner on the floor of the Assembly. As per popular sentiment, the BJP legislators have so far failed to create an impact in the eyes of the electorate on the front of deliverance.
The BJP is still perceived to be playing second fiddle for the sake of power. The issue of developmental projects and implementation of Rs 80,000 crore Prime Ministers’ package would also come under the scanner for scrutiny during the Budget session.
The Finance Minister is scheduled to present the Budget proposals for the year 2017-18 on January 11.
The Speaker is set to call the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee shortly to finalise the calendar of the Assembly and hold discussions with leaders of all the political parties to ensure smooth functioning of the House. On its part the ruling alliance is expected to pat its own back by claiming to restore the normalcy in the disturbed areas of Kashmir Valley and working towards fulfilling the Agenda of Alliance by bridging the gap between the two distinct regions of the State and restoring the credibility of democratic institutions.
