The recent controversy over whether Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Kanhaiya Kumar raised anti-India slogans or not or the same was doctored, the issue was blown bigger than the reality by none other than the over enthusiastic and patriotic, nationalist leaders from BJP. An obscure and unknown student leader getting BJP’s attention with top to bottom the party leaders going all guns against him has not served any purpose as people see but has exposed BJP’s other face which everyone talks about. This is not the first time that JNU has come into limelight for such controversies. Earlier, also the university had remained centre of controversies but never a student leader became a national hero like this. It looks party leaders have no other agenda than to get involved in cheap gimmicks of nationalism to keep the vote bank happy. This time even the Shiv Sena mouthpiece, Saamna, did not hesitate in rapping the BJP on its knuckles for making a “hero” out of nothing. It looks Modi government failed to handle the JNU crisis with tact and political sagacity. As a result Kanhaiya seems to be marching ahead and the government is merely following him. The atmosphere in the country is fast changing. Winning elections and assuming power is now the sole aim of political parties. Poll promises soon evaporate into thin air and farmers, labourers and students become victims of frustration… The BJP government’s anti-people policies such as dipping into the provident fund of crores of employees and then rolling back the decision in the face of nationwide resentment will exacerbate social unrest and add to the youth’s frustration. Under such situation more such agitations would take place. The anti-JNU measures seems particularly thoughtless especially when it is difficult to anticipate where the BJP’s next electoral victory will come from. Especially with university’s pan-India student body, developments in JNU will have some impact on the coming Assembly elections. That could be the one reason why Congress has suddenly become over active and does not want to miss the share of poll bounty.
