Police uses tear smoke shells to disperse the Moharam mourners

Police today used tear smoke shells to disperse the Moharam mourners near Batamaloo, dozens of Shia Muslim mourners got injured in the police action. Authorities have already imposed restrictions in Maisuma, Kralkhud, Kothibagh, Ram Munshibagh, Shergarhi, Shaheedgunj, Karan Nagar and Batmaloo areas to maintain law and order in Srinagar.
Since the beginning of separatist violence in Kashmir in the early 1990s, authorities have been disallowing Muharram processions in Srinagar to prevent miscreants from triggering sectarian clashes.
