JAMMU: In a major breakthrough, Jammu Police on Tuesday announced the busting of a well-organized two-wheeler theft racket operating across multiple areas of the city.
Addressing a press conference, SSP Jammu Joginder Singh said that the operation was carried out under Operation AVTAR, following a series of complaints from the public regarding frequent vehicle thefts in Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar and adjoining areas.
The SSP said that multiple FIRs – FIR No. 22/2025, 242/2025, 215/2025 and 220/2025, all under Section 303(2) BNS – were registered at Police Station Gandhi Nagar, after which a comprehensive investigation was launched.
“Based on the gravity of the theft pattern, a dedicated team led by SP South Dr Ajay Sharma was constituted, comprising PSI Mohd Ilyas, PSI Nadeem Akram and ASI Pintoo Kumar, under the close supervision of the SHO Gandhi Nagar and overall supervision of SDPO City South,” he said.
SSP Joginder Singh informed that technical surveillance, sustained field efforts and analysis of CCTV footage from several locations led to the arrest of three accused individuals-Harpreet Singh, son of Makhan Singh, resident of Khanpur, Tehsil Ramgarh, District Samba, Gurdarshan Singh, son of Shanakh Singh, resident of Pakhri, Tehsil Ramgarh, District Samba, and Himanshu Nanda, son of Tilak Raj Nanda, resident of Jindet Khurd, Tehsil Bishnah, District Jammu.
“During sustained questioning, all three confessed to their involvement in numerous theft cases. Acting on their disclosures, police recovered 40 stolen motorcycles and scooties, worth approximately Rs 35 lakh,” he added.
He stressed that the recovery includes high-demand models such as Splendor, Passion, Activa, Pulsar, Royal Enfield, TVS and Yamaha R15. “This is one of the biggest recoveries in recent years, and it has brought major relief to citizens who were repeatedly falling prey to these thefts,” the SSP said.
Providing details, the SSP noted that the stolen vehicles were recovered from different hideouts spread across Jammu and Samba districts.

He praised the Gandhi Nagar Police team for their professionalism and swift action, adding that further investigation is underway to identify potential buyers and other associates linked to the racket.
“The Jammu Police is committed to wiping out organised crime and ensuring the safety of the public. Such operations will continue with greater intensity,” SSP Joginder Singh assured.
Residents of the affected areas have widely appreciated the police for their action, which they said has restored public confidence and curtailed the rising trend of vehicle thefts in the city.
