PM has exclusive vision for Northeast: Dr Jitendra Singh

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has an exclusive vision for North-East which is reflected in his constant concern for the development of this region and his personal follow-up of various projects and schemes. This was stated here today by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Dr Jitendra Singh while releasing “e-book” highlighting the work, achievements and future initiatives of the Ministry of DoNER.
Talking to reporters here on Thursday, , Dr Jitendra informed that a meeting of North-Eastern Council (NEC) comprising Chief Ministers of Northeastern States and Governors is also being convened at Shillong on Friday.
Dr Singh said, it is no small achievement that the present government was instrumental in starting first ever train to the State of Meghalaya from Dudhnoi to Mendipathar which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi 29th November, 2014 during his visit to North-East. From the point of view of Railways, this was second historic landmark of the Narendra Modi government after the inauguration of Katra-Vaishnodevi Railway Station by the Prime Minister on 4th July, 2014, he added.
Ever since he was entrusted the charge of North-East region about a month ago, Dr Jitendra Singh said, he has taken it up as a challenge and tried to give impetus to the Ministry. As a part of this endeavor, he had convened a meeting of all the MPs belonging to North-East on 19th December, 2014 and will follow it up with NEC meeting.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on youth empowerment is evident from his recent decision to introduce a special scholarship scheme called “Ishaan Udan” for students from North-East and his announcement to set up a Sports University in Manipur. In addition during his visit, Prime Minister also announced the government’s decision to set up 6 new agricultural colleges in North-East, he informed.
Development of North-Eastern Region is at the top of government’s priority, said Dr. Jitendra, and disclosed that in the current budget year, Rs.53,705 Cr has been allocated for the purpose which is in addition to the Railway Budget. Another amount of Rs.100 Cr has been provided for organic farming and Rs.200 Cr for a new scheme called “North-East Road Development Corporation” which is being deliberated upon and finalized.
