JAMMU: Government Medical College (GMC) hospital has once again set an example by providing best possible medical treatment to the victims of cross-border shelling rushed to the hospital from Ramgarh area of Samba Sector on Tuesday.
One of the youngest victims, identified as 14 months old Pari, who lost four members of her family in the intense Pak shelling, was operated upon by the doctors after a gap of 24 hours when she was wheeled inside the emergency ward of the hospital.
The hospital authorities had no answers why no senior surgeon was made available and why she was given raw deal by the doctors despite clear cut directions from the Deputy Chief Minister Prof Nirmal Singh for extending best possible medical care facilities to the victims of cross border shelling.
According to close family members present in the GMC, “After Pari was shifted to the GMC her blood samples were taken and various pathology tests were conducted. But no one informed her why her splinter injuries were not treated till late in the evening”.
One of her maternal uncles said,” it is in the evening we decided to shift her to Military Hospital around 8.00 PM as she was growing restless and suffering acute pain”.
He said, Pari’s father is serving in the Indian Army and he too was shifted to Military Hospital along with two other patients.
Ironi-cally, Pari who had received splinter injuries in her neck and spine, was referred back to the GMC in the absence of Paediatric surgeon in the Military Hospital. Her father and two other patients stayed back in the Military Hospital.
Pari was brought back to the GMC Hospital past midnight and she had to wait further till 11.00 AM on Wednesday before team of surgeons operated upon her.
Medical Superintendent of the GMC Dr Romesh Gupta said, “Initially her family had requested to be shifted to Military Hospital and we provided them ambulance facility”. Dr Gupta said when she came back late in the night, surgery was planned and the same was conducted in the morning”.
He said, “We are monitoring her condition closely and not in a position to share more information”.
Meanwhile, distraught family members on Wednesday attended cremation of head of the family Maru Ram. Anju Devi and two other children were cremated on Tuesday. Injured Rakesh attended the cremation ceremony with the help of his colleagues in the Indian army.
