JAMMU: Demanding stern action against the in-laws of Suman Kumari, the parents sought protection under the law against the cruelty by her husband.
Suman Kumari was married to Rakesh Kumar in village Palli of Bari Brahmana some eight years back but her in-laws continue to torture her for the sake of dowry.
During the intervening night of 5th/6th May, Suman received severe injuries on head during a scuffle with her husband. After beating Suman, her husband threatened her parents that he will kill her if they refuse to give dowry. On this, the sister of Suman called local police station in the morning, but there was no one to entertain her report, moreover, when after repetitive attempts a police officer picked up the call, he denied to file complaint, claiming that it was not the right procedure to file a complaint.
Later, the Suman’s sister approached Bari Brahmana Police Station to file the complaint but was referred to Women Cell. The girl along with victim approached Women Cell for lodging the complaint but SHO Women Cell Arti Thakur refused to consider their plea.
Later, the family members registered a case of harassment for dowry and assaulting wife against Rakesh Kumar at Bari Brahmana Police Station. “Till date the police has failed to arrest her husband”, said Rattan Lal, father of the victim.
Meanwhile, President Aditi Welfare India Charitable Trust (AWICT) Aditi Sharma met Inspector General Police, Jammu Danesh Rana and discussed the case of Suman Kumari.
Aditi urged the IGP to immediately arrest accused Rakesh Kumar. She also asked the IGP to provide training to women police personnel for dealing with such cases at police station level. Taking swift action, IGP Jammu telephonically directed SDPO concerned ensuring the arrest of the accused.
