Opportunities open for students from other nations in US

Thiruvananthapuram: The United States would continue to draw students from other countries to pursue their studies in universities and colleges in the country, a senior official of the US Consulate General here said today.

“I do not think so”, said Charles Luoma Overstreet, Consular Chief when asked if there would be any slowdown in students travelling to United States for studies in the wake of Donald Trump becoming the President-elect of America.

He said universities and educational institutions in the United States are strong and offer a lot of opportunities for students and so “we will continue to draw large number of students from other countries”.

The official was here as part of a programme to promote education opportunities in USA.

International students at colleges in the United States increased by 7.1 per cent to 1,043,839 students in 2015-16.

“For the second year in a row, India has the largest growth in students studying in the United States, increasing by 24.9 per cent to reach 1,65,918 students.

“International students now make up 5.2 per cent of all higher education students in the United States, Overstreet said.
