JAMMU: The ten days winter camp organised by National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar, concluded here on Thursday.
On the concluding day the NSS volunteers led by Programme Officer Dr. Ashaq Malik along with Prof. Navdeep Bhalwal and Prof. Shiv Singh visited slum area in Balicharna where they distributed cloths and sweets among the inhabitants.
They took a brief review of literacy, health, sanitation, hygiene, socio-economic conditions and a damaged school in area.
They interacted with the children about harms of drug addiction and the essence of education, sanitation and personal hygiene. They too presented a cultural bonanza to mark New Year celebrations. On return to college, a painting competition on Sustainable development was also organised.
Later a valedictory function was organized where volunteers reflected their experiences during 10 days camp.
Principal of the College, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, appreciated the successful accomplishment of the camp. She said that serving the weaker sections of society is the need and NSS volunteers can play pivotal role in empowering these communities by continued awareness campaigns.
Prof. Sudanshu Sharma also lauded the efforts of NSS volunteers in community service and raising the garden in college campus.
NSS volunteer Menakshi and Hadiqa conducted the proceeding of programme whereas Dr. Ashaq Malik presented vote of thanks.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Prof. Ashwani Khajuria, Prof. Navdeep Bhalwal and Prof. Shiv Mangal besides NSS Programme Officers Dr. Shiveta Gandotra and Prof. Shrotika Rajput.
