JU men lose close contest, women reach QFs

JAMMU: The men’s team of host University of Jammu (JU) lost the close contest while women qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing North Zone Inter-University Badminton Tournament underway at Gymnasium Hall on the campus, here on Tuesday.
Now, the JU women shall take on last year’s semifinalist, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The GNDU has got direct entry into the last eight stages considering their last year’s ranking.
The JU men lost to UTU Dehradun 2-3. Earlier, the high spirited JU men fought bravely before losing to their opponent in the deciding doubles game. Though Chander and Avshesh were playing their first match because of team’s outright wins in the preliminary round, still they put up a great show against the better side of Dehradun.
Earlier, JU fought from behind after losing the opening two singles to level the score 2-2. The Results: Sunil lost to Ujjawal 10-21, 21-19, 14-21; Arjun lost to Neeraj 14-21, 16-21; Ankit and Sunil beat Neeraj and Ujjawal 21-11, 21-04. Reverse singles: Ankit defeated Anuj Chauhan 21-12, 21-10. Doubles: Chander and Avshesh lost to Vasu and Rishab 13-21, 14-21.
In the women’s pre-quarterfinals, played this afternoon, JU outplayed Doon University Dehradun 2-0. In singles, Akanksha Raina outplayed Nitika in straight easy sets of 21-04, 21-09. In doubles, the pair of Akanksha and Prabhjyot downed Shailee Bandana rather easily 21-06, 21-02.
Earlier, in the second round match, played late yesterday evening, JU women defeated CSKHPKV, Palampur 2-0. The Results: Akanksha Raina beat Deepika 21-07, 21-05; Akanksha and Prabhjyot defeated Deepika and Naaline Dass 21-05, 21-01.
Meanwhile, another tough side from the State, the men’s team of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra lost in the second round today to CSIMU Kanpur 3-0. The Results: Ashish Yadav lost to Pankaj Pandey 13-21, 11-21; Mahendra Kumar lost to Sanjeev Kumar 11-21, 08-21; Ashish and Deepak Jha lost to Pankaj and Akash 17-21, 19-21.
The women team of Kashmir University could not go beyond the second round after they lost to Punjab University Chandigarh 0-2.
Today’s matches were officiated by the technical penal comprising Krishan Gopal (Chief Referee), Jyoti Rajput, Shakeel Ahmed, J.S Arneja, Anil Gurkha, Sunil Gurkha, Vikram Jamwal, Balbir Singh Jamwal, Vipan Sharma, Amit Sharma, Taranpal Singh and Manmohan Sharma.
