LEH: Umlung and Chulungtse villages had no electricity until NHPC electrified these villages under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) scheme.
Chairman LAHDC, Leh Dr Sonam Dawa formally inaugurated the power supply to the villages in presence of NHPC Chief Engineer S. Adhikari at an impressive function held here.
Dr Dawa termed the development as new sunshine for these villages. A total of twelve households are in these villages located barely about 5 km away from Nimoo-Basgo-Alchi NHPC Power Station. Sources said that transmission line worth Rs.1.57 crore were laid from NHPC Power Station to the villages.
Dr Sonam Dawa appreciated collective efforts put in by NHPC and PDD to provide electricity to the villagers and added that good coordination between the two organisations made it possible to connect the villages to Alchi Power Station. He also promised to electrify all remaining remote villages of Leh in phased manner either by Solar or Hydel within two years.
The CEC assured to make effort to provide blacktopping of Umlung Road in future and promised to start work on NHPC’s proposed bridge at Basgo to which NHPC had already sanctioned Rs.9 crore funds to PWD Leh.
NHPC Chief Engineer, S Adhikari said that he visited Umlung the very next day of his posting here in Alchi and decided to provide power supply somehow during his tenure and his dream became true with the inauguration of the station. NHPC had provided a DG set to the village.
Councillor Khaltse Lobzang Sherab, Executive Councillors Tsering Wangdus and Mumtaz Hussein and PDD Chief Engineer, Raina were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.
