Neonatology Department created in GMC Jammu

JAMMU: In another milestone achievement, Superspeciality Department of Neo-Natology has been created in Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu.
The order regarding the same was issued by Principal & Dean GMC Jammu, Dr. Shashi Sudan Sharma in compliance to the Govt. order Me-Gztd./107/2021 dated August 2, 2022 wherein permission to start DM Neonatology course was granted by the administrative Department.
The Government has taken cognizance of the fact that there is need to create a dedicated Super Speciality Department of Neonatology, and with the aim to decrease the neonatal and infant mortality in whole of the Jammu region as well as to provide improved and optimum services to neonates, permission/sanction has been accorded for the creation of Super Speciality Department of Neonatology in Government Medical College, Jammu.
With the creation of Super Speciality Department of Neonatology, Government Medical College Jammu can start DM Neonatology course, which will further produce specialized doctors in the field of Neonatology.
GMC, Jammu shall become the first institute to start DM Neonatology course in J&K UT.
The Super Speciality Department of Neonatology will provide facilities like care to the newborns in NICUs and Neonatal Wards, providing Level III care and ventilation facilities especially to the extremely low birth weight high risk newborns, qualified and skilled faculty will operationalize recent advances in neonatal care like Inhaled Nitric Oxide, High Frequency Oscillation ventilation, Laminar flow, Total Parental Nutrition, Central catheters, research works for advance studies in Neonatology, teaching of DM candidates and handholding and mentoring of the peripheral newborn care units i.e. District Hospitals and New Medical Colleges.
With the functioning of Super Speciality Department of Neonatology, the newborn mortality rate will go down and a number of high risk newborn will have an intact survival.
It is pertinent to mention that GMC, Jammu already has started Renal transplant, open heart surgeries and DNB superspeciality courses in Deptts. of Urology, Cardiology, Neurosurgery & Neurology.
Further, as per the instructions of the Administrative Department regarding arrangement of manpower out of the existing staff in the Department of Pediatrics, the faculty and staff of existing Department of Pediatrics has been deputed in this Super Speciality Department of Neonatology till the new posts are created and filled in this Department.
The faculty and staff deputed in this Super Speciality Department of Neonatology include Dr. Ashu Jamwal (Professor), Dr. Anuj Bhatti (Associate Professor), Dr. Anumodan Gupta (Lecturer), Dr. Ajay Choudhary, Pediatrician (NHM), Dr. Divya Sarmal, Medical Officer (NHM), Dr. Punika Dubey, Medical Officer (NHM) and Dr. Rittu Bangotra, Medical Officer.
Dr. Ashu Jamwal, Professor shall Head this Super Speciality Department of Neonatology. She will coordinate with the HoD Pediatrics for smooth functioning of the Department and Senior and Junior Residents in the existing Department of Pediatrics shall be deputed to the Super Speciality Department of Neonatology on rotation basis for smooth functioning of the Department, the order stated.
