JAMMU: Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, Prof. S.K Jain on Tuesday delivered a lecture on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in the era of World Trade Organization (WTO)” at the MIET campus.
MIET organizes lectures by eminent experts and luminaries under its Distinguished Lecture Series on a regular basis. Prof. Jain is a Professor at IIT-Delhi where he has served in various capacities since 1985.
Maj. Gen. (retd.) Prof. S.K Sharma, Principal, MIET welcomed Prof. Jain and described him as an intellectual with high professional achievements.
Prof. Jain emphasized the importance of creating awareness about IPR and felt that all technical and non-technical graduates should be exposed to IPR knowledge. He felt that IPR is the cornerstone for driving competitive global advantage and provided several real-world examples pertaining to IPR monetization. He felt that India as a country needs to enhance its IPR protection laws in accordance with the WTO agreements, so that Indian patents can also be applicable world-wide, giving Indian inventors a level playing field.
Prof. Ankur Gupta, Joint Director, MIET, informed that audience that MIET shall be setting up an incubator on campus to nurture start-ups and hopefully incubate 5-6 companies in the next two years.
MIET has already initiated work on IPR filing 11 patents in diverse domains at the IPTO in the last four years. He requested Prof. Jain to provide guidance and mentoring to the incubator so that entrepreneurship can be given a boost in the region. He expressed gratitude to Prof. Jain for visiting MIET and providing insights into this high priority domain.
A memento was also presented to Prof. Jain on the occasion. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks.
