JAMMU: Saying that National Conference has all along stood by the labour class, Additional General Secretary and former minister Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal on Friday recalled the crucial role played by labourers in shaping the public movement launched decades ago.
Speaking at a function held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan here this morning, held in observance of the May Day, the Additional General Secretary said the party will strive for seeking restoration of labour rights and implementation of welfare schemes tailored for them in order to uplift their conditions economically and collectively.
Dr Mustafa Kamal, who was Chief Guest at the function, extended full support to the labour class and hoped that both state and central governments would work for their empowerment and economic emancipation by restoring their rights.
He referred to the background of this day and said it is being observed on May 1st all over the world to highlight the need for restoration of labour rights with a view to bridge the gap between haves and have-nots for harmonious growth of the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Senior State Vice President and former minister Surjeet Singh Slathia recalled the great role played by Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah for weaker sections of society especially the labour force and said history of National Conference is replete with steps taken from time to time for overall welfare of the labour class.
He dwelt elaborately on the initiatives taken by successive NC Governments for labour welfare and mitigating their difficulties from time to time.
Former Minister Abdul Gani Malik also spoke on the occasion and referred to the larger societal role towards welfare of the labour class. He said this important segment of the society has been contributing in the overall development of the county and and state in a big way and therefore all concerned should realize their responsibilities in restoring labour rights for their safe future.
Provincial President NC Labour Wing presided over the function and dwelt on the great struggle launched by the underprivileged segment of society the world over for achieving their due. He said the labour class plays pivotal role in the development and progress of the state and the country and therefore their welfare should be a collectively responsibility. Several other speakers also spoke on the occasion.
