National Science Day celebrated at JU

JAMMU: The Department of Zoology, University of Jammu, on Thursday organised National Science Day celebrations in the department.
The programme started with the formal welcome address by Head of the Department Prof. Roopma Gandotra who highlighted the importance of science in our day to day life with special emphasis on role of biological sciences in the sustenance of humanity and for the development of nations. During the programme a documentary on achievements of various renowned scientists was screened to motivate scientific temper among students.
A poster and slogan writing competition among students and scholars of the department was organised on the themes ‘Environmental Degradation and its Management’ and ‘Faunal Diversity of J and K State’.
A documentary film on ‘Role of Pollinators in Ecosystem’ by Dr. Sanjay Bhatia working in the field of Entomology was also screened. The programme followed by presentation by research scholars and students highlighting recent trends in various vital research areas in the field of zoology.
R.S Jasrotia, Chief Conservative Officer of State Forest Department interacted with the students and delivered a talk on Human-Wildlife Conflicts and its management.
Valedictory function started with a distribution of prizes to the winners of various competitive activities. In poster presentation, first, second and third prize was won by Needhi Sharma, Apoorva Sharma and Sukanya respectively. In slogan competition, Manvinder Singh, Sabhiya and Mayank were adjudged first, second and third respectively. In research presentation, Pawandeep Kour bagged first prize, Monica Sharma and Neha were declared second and third respectively.
The function concluded with a vote of thanks by Head of the Department. All the faculty members viz. Prof. J.S Tara, Prof. Seema Langer, Dr. Sanjay Bhatia, Dr. Arti Sharma, Dr Parvinder Kumar, Dr Sarbjeet Kour, scholars, students and staff members were present in all the events.
