Dear Editor,
According to a survey revealed by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), nearly three out of four people working in the non-agricultural sector in India are in informal jobs. Eighty per cent of these informal sector employees have no written contract and 72 per cent get no social security benefits. Manufacturing, construction, retail, transportation and storage are the main sectors employing informal workers, the NSSO has found. Among the states, Punjab, UP and West Bengal have the highest proportion of informal jobs. There is a need to secure the future of the young generation by minimising contractual jobs.
