REASI: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu organised the field day on maize crop under ISOPOM at village Bishora of Udhampur District.
KVK has laid around 5 hectares area under maize Front Line Demonstrations of maize crop. Around 60 farmers/farm women participated in the programme which was initiated by Dr. Banarsi Lal, scientist. He started the programme with brief introduction of maize crop and stressed on the hybrid varieties of maize.
He further said that farmers should save their maize crop from the diseases and elaborated important diseases of maize crop and gave their proper control measures. He suggested to the farmers that this year due to excessive rainfall maize crop suffered with stalk rot. He also suggested some control measures of this disease and advised the farmers to drain the water from maize fields.
Dr. Banarsi Lal elaborated the technological operations in maize crop. He emphasised on the balance dose of fertilisers in maize crop and added that proper doses of quality weedicides like atrazine should also be used in order to control the weeds in maize crop. He further narrated the control measures of major insects-pests in the maize crop adding that the farmers should have proper spacing between plant-to-plant and line–to-line.
Dr. Banarsi Lal motivated the farmers for sowing the single cross maize hybrids and suggested that they can earn more by growing the hybrid varieties. The laid maize fields were demonstrated to the farmers. Many Panchs and Sarpanchs of the area were also present in the programme. Various quarries were raised which Dr.Banarsi answered.
