MERC celebrates World Press Freedom Day

SRINAGAR: Media Education Research Centre (MERC) University of Kashmir celebrated world press freedom day in collaboration with JK Press Association. The theme of the event was “Let Journalism Thrive”.

Speakers emphasised on preserving and further strengthening freedom of press so as to help rebuild society on healthier lines.

Maya Mirchandani, Senior Editor NDTV was the Chief Guest on the occasion. She highlighted the issues confronting the media at local and national level.

While talking about the freedom of press, Maya said that audiences also have a role to choose the type of media they would like to encourage. She further called upon journalist community to introspect and find out if they come up to the expectations of the people regarding information needs.

Vice Chancellor KU, Prof Khurshid Iqbal Indrabi said media should do nothing to create panic in the society. Instead, he said, it should concentrate on truthful projection of happenings.

Prof. Nasir Mirza presented a paper on Kashmir press. He suggested that MERC should be strengthened to provide well trained media persons.

President, JK Press Association, Ghulam Hassan Kaloo said that his organisation is actively engaged in strengthening the interests of media fraternity while upholding the ethics of the profession and choices of readers. He said free press is pre requisite for a democratic society.
