JAMMU: Seeking support of every section of the society to take the on-going war against drug addiction to its logical conclusion, Chairman of the Team Jammu, Zorawar Singh Jamwal on Wednesday said that drug addiction is destroying younger generation of the State and it is need of the hour to evolve a consensus how to deal with this deadly menace. Zorawar was addressing a meeting of the prominent citizens of Jammu including Executive Committee members of J and K Excise and Commercial Taxes Employees Welfare Society (Regd) who invited him to render their unconditional support of the Team Jammu in its campaign against drug menace. Chairman of the Team Jammu said that drug abuse in J and K is part of Narco-Terrorism, imported from the neighbouring Pakistan to spoil youth of the State.
He regretted that no concrete policy has been so far formulated to deal with this type of terrorism.
“We have already started a campaign to mobilise legislators to make stringent laws to deal with this menace”, Zorawar informed members of the Civil Society and hoped that in the coming session of the State Legislature some concrete steps would be initiated in this regard by all political parties. While sharing details of district wise records of death cases due to drug over dose and percentage of youth falling prey to drug mafia in Jammu province, Jamwal informed the members of the Civil Society that this menace has consumed lives of hundreds of youth in Jammu region and it has taken younger generation in its grip but those at the helm of the affairs are still in deep slumber. “If we failed to untidily fight against this menace, future generation will not forgive us”, Singh said and expressed his gratitude towards members of the civil society to render support to Team Jammu.
“We are passing through a very crucial juncture. It is high time to come together to fight this menace”, he appealed to them, adding, “this menace has gripped youth of all castes, creeds, regions and religion so there is need to come on a common platform to fight to this menace”.
Jamwal demanded setting up rehabilitation centre on the pattern of Punjab in Jammu region to save lives of those youth who are victim of this menace. He said that there is urgent need to set up such rehabilitation centres in Jammu region because parents of majority of the drug addict youth could not afford to send their children to Punjab or other parts of the country. President of J and K Excise and Commercial Taxes Employees Welfare Society, Vijay Sharma and Chief Patron of Society, Aslam Qureshi (IAS Retd), in their respective speeches appreciated members/volunteers of Team Jammu for taking such initiative and extended full support to be part of the movement against drug menace and also to crush drug mafia. They also informed that till date they have 4,000 members registered in their society across the State and
each and every member will participate in the campaign launched by Team Jammu as it is need of the hour to educate
youth about this menace so as to save younger generation from becoming victim of this menace.
Prominent among others who spoke on the occasion included Secretary General K.S Arora, Chief Advisor Riaz Ahmed, patrons S T P Singh and Naseem Malik, vice-presidents Mohan Lal Sharma, S.K Sharma, S.P Khajuria and Naseem Manhas.
