JAMMU: On 61st day of agitation, the Action Committee of Lawyers practicing in Jammu wing of J&K High Court and Subordinate Courts held an impressive convention in Janipura Court Complex on Tuesday amid strict observance of COVID SOPs. Many senior and young lawyers participated in the convention and expressed their views. Besides Convener of Action Committee H C Jalmeria, the convention was addressed by Senior Advocates Prof Bhim Singh, J A Kazmi (former vice president Jammu Bar), Subhash Singh Sambyal (former president Samba Bar), Vinod Abrol, Mohd Usman Salaria (former vice president Jammu Bar), Ashok Kumar Basotra and Surjit Singh Andotra.
The speakers pointed out grievances of lawyers cropped up due to continued closure of the doors of High Court and partially of subordinate Courts, closure of lawyers facilities in court complex, non-availability of stamp papers in courts, closure of the forums under Consumer Protection Act, Human Rights Act, Right to Information Act, Accountability Act besides unnecessary contempt proceeding initiated against some young lawyers. They were critic of the faulty decision of the Govt. for shifting Registration work from Judicial to Revenue Officers which has caused great inconvenience to the public and lawyers.
It was observed in the Convention that the Judiciary is protector of the rights of citizens guaranteed by Constitution and other laws and is the most important pillar of Democracy. People approach the judiciary seeking protection of the constitutional and statutory rights through lawyers who have the status of officers of courts. Their role is sine qua non in judicial functioning.
Others present on the occasion included M P Gupta(former secretary), B R Sharma (former vice president), B R Chandan, C S Gupta (former secretary), S S Chib, Suresh Sharma (former vice president), Vijay Sharma, K B Sajgotra, Rajinder Chanyal, Madan Lal, K M Bhatti, Manohar Gupta, Bansi Lal Sharma, A S Azad, Meharban Singh, Amit Gupta, Umesh Sharma, Narinder Sharma, P S Pawar, K S Chib, Harbans Singh, Charanjeev Singh, Arvind Jalmeria, Harish Kaila, Leena Devi, Upasna Thakur, Rozina Afzal, A M Khan, Dharamvir Singh, O P Hans, Atul Raina, Sudershan Kumar and Ajun Manhas.
The Lawyers Action Committee decided to continue its agitation.
