Ladakh hosts mega reception for Sonam Wangchuk; demand for Sixth Schedule takes another momentum

LEH: In a historic moment, thousands of people gathered on Leh Pologround as religious organisations of Leh hosted a mega reception ceremony in favour of renowned activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk who was on a 5-day ‘climate fast’ from 26 to 30 January at the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL) Campus to highlight environmental issues concerning Ladakh and the Himalayans and also to seek constitutional safeguards under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to protect the ecologically-fragile Ladakh from industrial exploitations.
In a historic event Sonam Wangchuk was taken from HIAL Campus all the way to Leh Polo-ground in a motorcade where he was received by thousands of Ladakhis who chanted slogans in his favour and also in favour of Sixth Schedule for Ladakh.
Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA)Vice President Chering Dorjay Lakruk claimed that this was the biggest ever public gathering he had witnessed on Leh Polo-ground in his life. Leaders from all religious communities admired Sonam Wangchuk for the selfless service he was doing for the Ladakhi society and assured him all support for the future. President LBA Thupstan Chhewang while addressing the jam-packed Polo-ground proposed that Sonam Wangchuk be made a member of the Apex Body and so that Thupstan Chhewang can take Wangchuk along for the talks with the Government of India regarding Ladakh’s issues which include Statehood for Ladakh, Sixth Schedule, Separate Parliamentary seats for Leh and Kargil and constitution of Public Service Commission for Ladakh.
Wangchuk accepted the request to assist Apex Body if required.
However, he made it clear that he has no political ambition but would continue to provide his assistance and service for the cause of Ladakh as and when required.
