JAMMU: Krishi Vikas Kendra (KVK) Jammu today organized an awareness event to celebrate World Soil Day.
The awareness event was held here at Village Katal Batal focusing on keeping soil alive and protection of soil biodiversity. Around 65 participants including progressive farmers, farm women, Agriculture Extension Officer, Scientist from KVK Jammu actively attended the programme.
Dr Punit Choudhary, Sr Scientist and Head KVK Jammu sensitized the participants about the ill effects of injudicious use of pesticides and deteriorating health of soil. The farmers were also advised to use natural farming practices, adoption of organic farming, vermicompost production and other measures of soil conservation. He further informed that World Soil Davis is celebrated though out the globe and ‘it is important for people to understand that our food security depends on healthy soil.’ Dr Ravneet Kour, Scientist Horticulture made the farmers aware about routine testing of the soil for adoption of recommended doses of fertilizer.
Earlier, Dr Prem Kumar welcomed the participants and guests in the programme and deliberated upon use of organic inputs for improving soil health.
A Message from Agriculture Minister GOI was also read out during the programme. Poonam Abrol, Programme Assistant, Home Science elaborated upon the value addition and processing of farmers produce for earning more income. Kesar Ahmad, Agriculture Extension Officer, Nagrota appraised the farmers about the different schemes for the farming community. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Taro Devi- progressive farm women of the village.
