JAMMU: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Sunday expressed optimism about the ongoing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, referring to the event as a “festival of democracy.” In an interview with CNN News18, he highlighted the revitalization of democratic aspirations in the region, which had been dormant for years. According to Dr. Singh, the current political landscape reflects the “mainstreaming of democracy,” a transformation credited to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Dr. Singh noted the impressive voter turnout and candidate participation, marking a significant shift from past elections, where nominations were often uncontested. He emphasized that for the first time, elections in Jammu and Kashmir are mirroring those across India, with active engagement from the electorate. This newfound enthusiasm, he believes, is a result of the equitable development experienced under Modi’s governance, particularly in Jammu.Reflecting on the historical context, Dr. Singh contrasted today’s environment with the previous era of limited political participation, where election processes were marred by fear and manipulation. He stated that, over the past decade, both Jammu and Kashmir have experienced substantial progress, replacing past agitations with a focus on peace and development. Highlighting achievements in his own constituency, Dr. Singh mentioned significant advancements in healthcare and infrastructure, including the establishment of multiple centrally funded medical colleges and the development of airports. He asserted that these developments were long overdue and attributed them to the government’s proactive approach. On water rights, Dr. Singh commended Modi for advancing stalled projects under the Indus Water Treaty, ensuring India’s rightful share of water resources. He also reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to revoking Article 370, framing it as a long-held conviction dating back to the Jan Sangh manifesto. Dr. Singh criticized previous political leaders in Kashmir for exploiting Article 370 for personal gain, maintaining that this exploitation contributed to the region’s underdevelopment. He expressed particular concern for West Pakistan refugees, who had been denied citizenship and basic rights for decades. Dr. Singh argued that these individuals, who have long been nationalists, were overlooked by the Congress and National Conference due to their lack of electoral appeal. He assured that under Modi’s leadership, their rights are now being acknowledged.Regarding the potential restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Singh echoed Modi’s sentiments, asserting that this step is already being planned. He urged that the opposition’s claims to the issue are premature, as the government is committed to this transition. In conclusion, Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized Jammu and Kashmir’s pivotal role in India’s economic future, noting the region’s rich resources and potential contributions to the national economy. He painted a picture of a united, developed Jammu and Kashmir, filled with optimism as the final phase of elections approaches. With a focus on continued growth and restoration of rights, the BJP’s vision could signal a defining moment in the region’s political history.
