KAKRYAL: The Institute of Oncology at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Kakryal, comprising the Department of Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Haemato Oncology and Radiation Oncology is now functional. After getting approval of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), the most advanced radiation machine Elekta-Versa HD installed in Superspeciality Hospital, Kakryal, is now available to provide treatment to cancer patients. With the start of this facility the SSH Kakryal has become the first hospital in the State to provide such services. Various cancer treatments i.e. Surgical, Medical, Radiation Oncology are now available to the people of J&K under one roof. Dr. Vikas Roshan of the Department of Radiation Oncology apprised that Linear Accelerator is equipped to provide advanced radiotherapy services like SRS, SBRT, VMAT, IMRT, IGRT, 3DCRT leading to comprehensive cancer care at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. The Department shall also be providing Brachytherapy services by Nucletron HDR- 18 Channel equipments. This will lead to delivery of high precision radiation with minimal side effects. Dr. Mir from Medical Oncology – Haemato Oncology stated that SMVDNSH has started ‘conventional Chemotherapy’ and ‘Targeted treatment’ for various types of cancers. Targeted-treatment facility so far has been extended to Lymphoma, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (Blood Cancer), Multiple Myloma and Non Small Cell Lung cancer. Besides, we are contemplating to extend the facility of Targeted-treatment for breast cancer and other amenable cancers as well. He further stated that our goal is to deliver maximum benefit to every cancer patient at affordable costs so as to make the life of patient, his family and the society at large comfortable and happy. Dr. Sandeep Kaul from the Department of Surgical Oncology stated that prompt surgical management of cancer can cure the patient. The department is well equipped and competent to offer advanced and complex surgical procedures with adequate post-operative support to perform radical cancer surgeries. The department has so far conducted surgeries for cancer of the breast, head and neck, Colo-Rectal and Gynaecological Malignancies (Uterus, Ovaries and Cervix). The department is equipped to attend more complex procedures for the benefit of the people of the State.
