J&K Police lady cops get prime postings to serve society

JAMMU: The vision of the Prime Minister ‘Parhegi Beti To Badhegi Beti’, fits well in Jammu and Kashmir Police Department where lady cops including top ranking officers are serving at prime and prominent positions.
Of the 158 Deputy Superintendents of Police transferred recently, eight lady officers have been posted at prime positions in different wings.
Although women in the belt forces are generally deployed in administrative works besides being kept reserved in the battalions but the newly appointed Director General of Police Dr S.P Vaid has deployed around eight to nine lady officers at important positions in order to give due share to the ‘fairer sex’.
“Women cannot be neglected from serving at prominent postings and their deployment at different positions not only empowers them but inspires others to be a part of country’s professional force,” sources in the Police Headquarters said.
They said that the DGP is very visionary and focused, adding, “He wants women to serve society because they (females) understand things in much better way.” Moreover, the women fraternity, if facing any hardship in the civil society, becomes more open to lady officer than male and the deployment of lady officers can be helpful in mitigating crimes against women.
However, in the recent reshuffle of Dy SPs, the women officers have been deployed in welfare wing, headquarters, traffic, railways, special branch and civil defence.
Besides this officers of SSP and SP ranks in women category, are also presently serving in traffic department in Jammu as well as Srinagar, which is appreciable.
“Women should not be confined to closed doors only and when they have chosen the profession on their own, they should also be given equal opportunity to serve the society and the department as well,” one of the lady officers pleading anonymity said.
She said that in present world, women are competing male shoulder to shoulder in every field, adding, “then why to develop a thought that women cannot work in field being in belt or armed forces.”
“BSF have deployed women border guards along Indo-Pak border and the ladies are doing so well,” another officer said adding that ITBP has also raised its first women battalion and it is being deployed in Ladakh region, the Cold Desert–close to Sino-India border.
Police means “policing”, no matter it is being done by man or a woman—because it should be result oriented.
