J&K Fencers win three bronze in Nationals

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir fencing team returned with three bronze medals in the just concluded 33rd Senior National Fencing Championship held at Pune in Maharashtra.
While Vishal Thapar and Riya Bakshi won a medal each in individual events, the Sabre men team lost in the semifinals to contain with a bronze.
Earlier, the first bronze came for J&K in men Sabre event with Vishal Thapar making it to the semifinals defeating Varinder Johal 15-09 in quarterfinals. However, he lost to Abhay Shinde of Maharashtra in semifinals.
The second bronze won by experienced Riya Bakshi in Foil event. Riya qualified for the semifinals beating Sonia of Manipur 15-14.
In the men Sabre team event, J&K team comprising of Vishal Thapar, Javed Ahmed, Mayank Sharma and Amit Chib defeated Haryana 45-43 to qualify for the semifinals and confirm the bronze. Howeve, in the semifinals, the team lost to SSCB 23-45.
