Jammu girl Meenal wins gold in Commonwealth Chess C’ship

JAMMU: Ace Chess player of the Jammu and Kashmir State, Meenal Gupta brought laurels to the State by winning gold medal in the Commonwealth Chess Championship held at Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka, recently. Meenal, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Sunjuwan and trainee of Ace Chess Academy, won the gold medal in Under-14 category.
More than 500 players and officials from 11 commonwealth countries took part the championship, said Atul Kumar Gupta, President All J and K Chess Association, in a handout issued on today. In a tough competition, Meenal Gupta remained undefeated in the nine-round event and won the gold.
Secretary J and K State Sports Council and other members of sports council congratulated Meenal for her historic achievement.
President and Secretary All J and K Chess Association Atul Kumar Gupta and Ashiq Ahmad Kolu have lauded the efforts of Meenal for bringing laurels to State.
Meenal Gupta was trained by Vivek Gupta for this big event.
Meenal Gupta said that it was due to very high-tech training by her coach and hard work for last four years she could win this medal.
She also expressed gratitude to DC KVS Jammu Region A.V.L.J Rao for encouraging and Principal KV Sunjuwan Manish Tuli for extending support for achieving this milestone.
Earlier, Meenal had won silver medal in National Schools Championship at New Delhi two years ago.
