Jammu city stinks as civic workers strike enters day 2

JAMMU: The residents of Jammu city on Friday woke up to a harrowing situation after they found stinking garbage and filth littered on roads and lanes due to sanitation workers who went on indefinite strike from today to press their demand for re-organisation of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC). The sanitation situation in the city is likely to deteriorate further as the protesting workers said that they have decided to stop garbage collection operation till all their demands are met. A large number of sanitation employees and workers from JMC departments have been on strike which entered the second consecutive day on Friday. A larger number of workers including women Safaikaramcharis assembled in the JMC premises and raised slogans in favour of their demands.The protesters carrying placards raised slogans against the State Government and JMC for not addressing their demands pending for last several months. The union is demanding re-organisation of JMC, scrapping of NGO system in JMC, deployment of municipal employees in wards instead of parking slots, regularisation of contractual drivers of JMC who have completed nine years service, holding of DPC for all cadres etc.
Civic Safaikaramcharis Union (CSU) President Rinku Gill said that at numerous times they had given representation and submitted charter of demands to the concerned authorities but no positive action has been taken by the municipal administration which compelled them to adopt agitation path. Gill also stated that if any epidemic occurs regarding health and sanitation in Jammu city, the JMC authorities shall be responsible for that.
Vijay Kumar Sanitary Supervisor Union and All Clerical Staff, Chairman Ranjit Singh, Gulzar Masih, Manga Mattoo, Camres David, Issac Bhatti, Ashwani, Jung Bahadur, Jewels, Vicky, Narinder, Chanchal, Sadeek, Kulwinder, Rajesh, Rakesh, Shabba, Tersem, Bagicha, Surinder Bhatti, Thomas, Sabhi, Naresh, Vivek Sood, Manzoor, Bali and Bansi were also present in the protest.
