SRINAGAR: World Snow Day is celebrated every year by International Ski Federation (ISF) all over the world through its member nations. Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) entrusted this responsibility to its affiliated unit i.e. Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) at Gulmarg.
The aim of the celebration is to attract the youth of the nation to snow sports and reverse the decline of our youth’s participation in snow sports.
This also gives an opportunity to the youth of remote areas to explore snow sports as well as attracts the new comers to join these sports.
This is the world’s biggest event over the snow where millions of ski lovers participate every year. IISM Gulmarg invited youth of the Valley and other parts of the country and gave them an opportunity to participate in various snow sports free of cost. J and K Ski Federation lead by its Secretary Mohammad Yousef Mandoo, took an active part in the event.
They brought 30 children’s from the Central Kashmir University who participated in the event at Gulmarg alongwith IISM. All stake holders including Gulmarg Tourism, Cable Car Corporation and Army took part in the event and offered different services to the participants. J.S Dhillon, Principal IISM Gulmarg welcomed all guests and participants and provided all administrative support to them free of cost.
“These types of events not only provide an opportunity to our youth to pursue snow sports but also go a long way to promote winter tourism,” he said. IISM Gulmarg celebrates this day every year and makes elaborate arrangements for the local youth to join this event, he said adding these events could be fully exploited by tourism department to attract tourists in the Valley.
