LEH/NEW DELHI: In a challenging rescue operation involving a medical emergency, an IAF helicopter successfully evacuated a mother and her new born baby from a remote and inhospitable region of Ladakh at a height of over 16,000 feet.
According to initial information, the District Commissioner Leh requested the Air Force yesterday to evacuate a Ladakhi woman and her child from Phuang Phirste area.
They were reportedly suffering from a medical emergency due to obstructed delivery and their life was in danger, Air Force officials here said.
“This was a remote region without any road connectivity at an elevation of 16,200 feet, far away from civilisation,” they said.
IAF was the only hope for the mother and her new born baby and the ‘Siachen Pioneers’, a helicopter unit of the Air Force, was pressed into service.
Personnel of the unit were able to successfully rescue the mother and her baby, the officials said.
