Homeguard jawan harass UK woman on train; discharged

Chandigarh:- A homeguard jawan was arrested for allegedly harassing a British student aboard a train at Amritsar following which he was discharged from duty today, police said.

On the directions of S K Sharma, DGP cum Commandant General Homeguards, guard Sukhwinder Singh posted in company Chehratta in district Amritsar was discharged from duty on alleged charges of harassing and making obscene gestures towards a UK national on board an Amritsar-Delhi train on May 19, an official spokesman said here.

The guard was arrested by the Railway Police Punjab, after a the tourist accused him of sexually harassing her on board Shaheed Express while she was travelling from Amritsar to New Delhi and booked under Sections 354 (a) and (b) which deal with sexual harassment of women, the spokesman said.

The case was referred to the Divisional Commandant, Punjab Home Guards Jalandhar and on the basis of the report submitted by the Investigating Officer, he said.

Jawan Sukhwinder Singh was discharged from duties with immediate effect, he added.
