Govt PG College Rajouri celebrates National Mathematics Day

Rajouri: The Science Club in collaboration with Department of Mathematics of Govt. PG College Rajouri celebrated National Mathematics Day to mark 133rd birth anniversary of great mathematician S. Ramanujan here today.
On this occasion a webinar organized in which Prof. U V Balakrishnan from Department of Mathematics, Sharda University, Greater Noida, UP, was the resource person who delivered a talk on the topic “A peep into life and works of Ramanujan”. Prof. Balakrishnan lucidlyexplained the genius work of Ramanujandiscoveringsome 3900 equations, summaries and resultsindependently in his short life of just 33 years (22 December 1887 – 26April 1920). At the age of 9, Ramanujan gave PNT solution and at age 17 Bernoulli number then he gave the number theory, prime number theorem (named after him, Ramanujan prime), divergent series, arithmetic functions etc. that laid foundation of mathematics for generations of mathematicians, he underlined. In his presentation, he also reminded Hardy’s rediscovery of Ramanujan’s work which is so relevant till date.
Principal of College, Prof. (Dr.) Shakeel Ahmed Raina who himself is a Mathematician, also gave a detailed talk on role of Mathematics as mother discipline and lauded work of Ramanujan as one of greatest mathematician of all times.
He emphasized upon the need for the promotion of mathematics at all levels which is more important than many disciplines in today’s life.”Genius work of Ramanujan is great source of inspiration for all of us and furthering it for greater good of humanity shall be real tribute to him”, he added. Dr. Ashaq Malik, Secretary of Science Club of College, and Convener of webinar, conducted proceedings of programme whereas Prof. Khalid Hussain, Department of Mathematics, and member organizing committee presented the formal vote of thanks. A large number of students, scholars and faculty members across region and beyond participated in the webinar.
