Dear Editor,
With his iconic role and sterling sacrifice in the country’s freedom struggle, Bhagat Singh has captured popular imagination and inspired awakening among generations of youth. Various political outfits have attempted to appropriate his legacy for political purposes. But despite a number of memorials, films, books and museums to perpetuate his memory, it is a pity that Bhagat Singh has not been accorded due recognition in the political narrative post Independence as he represents a challenge to every tendency in politics. Both the Congress and the BJP are, perhaps, allergic to his radical revolutionary stance against the British and his anti-capitalistic, Marxian orientation. A voracious reader and a creative thinker, he envisioned a society that ensured freedom, equality and justice to all. Instead of habitually singing paeans and offering floral tributes on his martyrdom day, the need of the hour is to genuinely understand and follow this socialist’s philosophy to make India a better place to live in.
