Excise Duty row: Jewellers back on strike, seal shops

JAMMU: Jewellers on Monday resumed their strike and sealed the shops of members of Swarnkar Sangh and Sarafa Association demanding rollback of the one per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery.
Led by Raman Suri Chairman, Sarafa Association and Swarnkar Sangh Joint Action Committee Jammu Province, the members of jeweller fraternity assembled at Jain Bazaar and raised slogans in support of their demands. The protestors also blocked the movement of traffic in Jain Bazaar, as part of their protest.
Suri said, “We have sealed around 2,000 jewellery shops in the areas including Jain Bazaar, Bahu Plaza, Gandhi Nagar, Dhountly Bazaar and other parts of Jammu province besides ensuring that jewellers could not use backdoor entries to pursue business. Though, the strike will cause lot of inconvenience to customers but it is being done only to benefit the people”.
Warning the Union Finance Minister and the Union Ministry, he said, “Today’s rally at Jantar Mantar could be seen as a warning sign since any delay in decision or an adverse decision will strongly affect the vote bank of the concerned party across India.”
Prominent among those who joined the protest include Raj Kumar Babbar Vice President All India Swarnkar Sangh and President Swarnkar Sangh, Jammu Province, Parjan Kumar Jain President Sarafa Association Jammu, Kulbhushan Anand President Swarnkar Sangh Jammu District, Vijay Kumar Verma General Secretary, Ajay Vaid General Secretary, Surinder Jain Treasurer, Ajay Talla, Rakesh Mahajan, Sanjay Jain, C.L Khajuria, C.L Puri, Vijay Saraf, Darshan Dhalla.
