JAMMU: Senior BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha member Shamsher Singh Manhas died after a prolonged illness at his residence here on Monday, his party colleagues said.
Manhas, 65, is survived by his wife, son and a daughter.
Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over Manhas’s death. “Saddened by the demise of veteran leader and former MP Rajya Sabha… He was always committed to the well-being of the people,” the LG said in a post on X.
Manhas, a former president of the Jammu and Kashmir unit of BJP, was sick for the past nearly six months and breathed his last at his Toph Sherkhanian residence in Jammu late this afternoon, BJP’s national executive member Ravinder Raina told PTI.
Paying rich tributes to Manhas, Raina said he was a bold voice of Jammu and Kashmir who represented the people in the Rajya Sabha for five years from 2015.
“He was a disciplined soldier of BJP and his death is an irreparable loss to the party and the community,” Raina said.
People will always remember his contribution to their welfare, Raina said.
BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh expressed deep sorrow over the demise of veteran BJP leader.
Chugh stated that the passing of Shamsher Manhas is a significant loss for the party and the region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Chugh added that Manhas joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980 and was one of its founding members. His organizational skills and unwavering dedication to the party played a pivotal role in strengthening the BJP. He served as the Jammu and Kashmir BJP State President from 2009 to 2012 and as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from 2015 to 2021.
Chugh remarked that Manhas’s life was a testament to his commitment to the ideals and principles of the BJP.
His leadership and guidance will continue to inspire us. Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Chugh prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.
BJP leader and Spokesperson, J&K, Gaurav Gupta expressed deep sorrow over demise of former Rajya Sabha Member, calling it an irreparable loss to the party and the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
“Shamsher Singh Manhas was not just a political leader but a guiding force who dedicated his life to serving the people with integrity and dedication. His demise has created a void that can never be filled,” he added.
Extending his condolences to the bereaved family, Gaurav Gupta prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the family and well-wishers in this hour of grief.
Expressing deep sorrow over the demise of Shamsher Manhas, Sat Sharma, President, J&K BJP, said that the Shamsher would continue to inspire lakhs of BJP workers in Jammu & Kashmir.
Sat Sharma said that the party will always remember Shamsher for his invaluable contributions in the organization.
