EVS JU celebrates World Environment Day

JAMMU: Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu in collaboration with AKKA, Jammu celebrated World Environment Day in University of Jammu. The function was inaugurated by Chief Guest, Prof. R.D Sharma, Vice- Chancellor, University of Jammu by planting an Amla sapling in the department premises.

The faculty and staff also planted Amla saplings around the department to commemorate this day.

Later, a valedictory cum prize distribution function was organised to honour the volunteers and students who participated in series of awareness activities conducted by the department on important environmental related days.

Prof. Sharma encouraged the students and scholars to keep the university clean by organising cleanliness activities within the campus at least once in a week and also include volunteers from other departments in such activities.

He said that it becomes the prime responsibility of every citizen to wisely use the natural resources available to the mankind otherwise they won’t last forever if we continue to use them excessively.

Earlier, Prof. A.K Raina, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences presented the welcome address and also introduced the theme of the Environment Day ‘Seven billion dreams one planet; Consume with Care’.

Dr. Deepika Slathia, Senior Assistant Professor presented a brief report of various awareness activities organised by the department in last six months. R.K. Khajuria, President, AKAA and Coordinator SEER made a presentation on how we can contribute our bit towards environment by changing our lifestyles.

Anu Sharma, Research Scholar briefly highlighted some of the environmental issues within the university.

Among others present on the occasion were Prof. Emeritus S.P.S Dutta, Prof. R.K Rampal, Dr. Sanjay Sharma, Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Dr. Meenakshi Khajuria, Dr. Rashid,  Jai Kumar, Special Sec. to VC, Aman Sharma besides scholars and students of various departments.

Dr. Deepika Slathia presented the vote of thanks. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Sehrish Gazal, Research Scholar of the Department.
