JAMMU: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Zone President Jammu West Puneet Singh Jamwal on Monday said that rising number of vehicles in Jammu city and shrinking carriageways should be a matter of concern for traffic authorities in days to come. Now that annual Darbar will also move to Jammu in next one month, traffic on roads will be quite haphazard. In additional, remaining months of the year are also packed with festivals and bazars are witnessing great rush.
Puneet Singh Jamwal said that certain areas in Jammu East and West constituencies are so much packed that traffic moves at snail’s pace. In order to ease out problems of parking, the PDP led coalition government has constructed state of the art parking lots in City Chowk and more such facilities are coming up in other parts the city as well. Despite that traffic on roads has to be managed by traffic authorities.
He said that several city roads lack proper road markings due to which people especially youth drive recklessly. Proper markings on the roads force one to lane drive for which roads and buildings department must begin a drive to ensure that all roads are marked properly. Road stretch from Satwari to Bikram Chowk needs markings on priority as it is very sensitive stretch.
He asserted that traffic authorities must regulate vehicles in a way that city roads get rid of frequent traffic jams. If needed some roads must be made one-way so that traffic moves in smooth manner. Jammu Municipal Corporation joined by JDA and other enforcement wings of other civic agencies should also get city footpaths rid of encroachments and get carriageways cleared for smooth flow of traffic.
He said Jammu city is fast expanding and unauthorised parking especially on city bridges and flyovers must be stopped to avoid accidents especially during night. He urged traffic authorities to immediately ask commercials vehicle owners to not to park vehicles on flyovers and city bridges.
