Efforts afoot to preserve, propagate Sanskrit: Dy CM

JAMMU: Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh on Thursday said that the necessary efforts are afoot to preserve and propagate Sanskrit as it forms the basis of the Indian civilisation and thought.
The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at the Annual Day function of Rashtriya Sanskriti Sanasthan at Kotbalwal here.
Professor Vishwa Murti Shastri, a world renowned Sanskrit Scholar, Prof Bacha Bharti, Principal of the Institution, International sportsperson Harmeek Singh, Dr Chandra Mauli Raina, Dr Sharat Chander Sharma, Dr Satish Kapoor and scholars of national and international repute also attended the function. The Deputy Chief Minister said that Sanskrit forms the basis of Indian history and “we should all collectively ensure that it is propagated especially among the younger generation academicians and researchers, so that they will be able to connect themselves with the glorious past of India.” He said the ancient texts written in the language need to be comprehended and translated in a proper manner keeping in view the historical context and perspective of that age.
Dr Singh said Sanskrit language forms the basis of several languages and there is need to take necessary initiatives for making it as one of the most cherished academic subjects among the scholars and the students. He said Sanskrit scholars and the lovers of the language should also supplement the efforts being taken by the government for preservation and propagation of this ancient and classical language.
Responding to the demands of the students and the faculty, the Deputy Chief Minister assured them that all their concerns regarding the recognition of the course will be taken up with the concerned department. He said the issue of water scarcity, provision of the transport facilities and other related issues would be redressed soon.
Later, the Deputy Chief Minister distributed prizes among the students who have excelled in academics and sports activities. He also released the college magazines.
