Dogri play ‘Ghumayee’ enthralls Patiala audience

PATIALA: Natrang’s Internationally acclaimed Dogri play ‘Ghumayee’ conceived written, designed and directed by Balwant Thakur mesmerised the theatre elite of Punjab at the Theatre Festival-2014 organised by North Zone Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture here at Kalidass Auditorium.
Considered to be one of the most creative, innovative and original play produced in the post India-Independence period, the play won the appreciation of one and all and was greeted with repeated applauses.
Padamshree Balwant Thakur’s ‘Ghumayee’ is the first Indian play which made it to the world famous ‘Frankfurt Theatre Festival’, Frankfurt, Germany in 2009. It also has the credit of having featured in world experimental Theatre Festival Moscow, Russia and in the Common Wealth Games, New Delhi besides Belgrade, Yaroslavl, Hungary and Poland.
Staged for over 200 times globally, play ‘Ghumayee’ is based on Dogri fable of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi hills.
The most noteworthy aspect of the play was its electrifying language of images and soulful music and out of the world singing by acclaimed Suraj Singh. The stunning and intense acting by Natrang’s seasoned actors kept the audience spellbound. Vikrant Sharma received standing ovation for his magical acting. The senior actors of Jammu stage Suresh Kumar, Anil Tickoo, Neeraj Kant, Pawan Verma and Subash Jamwal gave remarkable performances. Aarushi Thakur in her maiden performance presented impressive portrayal of the character. Others who gave successful performances included Ankush Lakhnotra, Sakshi Prakash, Juhi Singh, Sanchita Dubey, Gopi Sharma, Vanshika Gupta, Surya Salathia, Amit Raina, Rajan Thakyal, Ravinder Manhas, Pankaj Verma, Mahikshit Singh and Masood Qadir.
The lights were designed by Anil Tickoo and Mohammad Yaseen is credited for effective musical score. The show was coordinated by Aaftab Singh.
