Division Bench directives in PIL seeking compensation for landmine victims

JAMMU: Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court comprising Chief Justice M.M Kumar and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur on Tuesday directed Deputy Commissioner Poonch and Union of India to file latest status report regarding compensation to LoC mine blast victims.
The direction came in response to Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking compensation for LoC mine blast victims. Advocate Irfan Khan appeared for the PIL while AAG Ravinder Sharma appeared for the State and ASGI Sindu Sharma for the Union of India.
The Division Bench observed that as per Order dated 26th November, 2014 asking Deputy Commissioner Poonch to file the latest status report has not been complied with. The said order also required him to appear in person in case report was not filed. AAG Ravinder Sharma stated that the Deputy Commissioner Poonch has sought exemption from personal appearance for today and he is likely to file the latest status report by 12th December, 2014.
Division Bench further observed that status report on behalf of Union of India in terms of order dated 26th November, 2014 has also not been filed and directed that the needful be done before the next date of hearing by specifying as to why nine cases mentioned in which the DC Poonch has sent nine cases for payment of ex-gratia compensation to the victims, have not been decided.
