JAMMU: The Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu inaugurated a two-day Red Cross Mela organised by NSS and Red Cross Units of Government College for Women (GCW) in college premises on Saturday.
Principal of GCW Gandhi Nagar, Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Hony. Secretary, Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu, R.C Puri and Cultural Officer Information Department Raman Joshi besides faculty members, parents, locals and students in large numbers were also present.
The programme began by lighting of the traditional lamp by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries followed by welcome address by Dr. Kiran Bakshi.
Shantmanu appreciated the efforts of college to support the cause of Red Cross and offered his full co-operation to organise such pertinent events for the welfare of society at large. He also 55 stalls set up by the college students.
He said that the objective of organizing the Mela was to create awareness among the masses regarding Red Cross Society and generate funds for the welfare activities of the society.
He stressed for greater involvement of social organisations and youth in extending service to downtrodden and those facing distress due to manmade or natural calamities besides providing services to destitute, orphans and needy people.
Discussions were held with regard to arrangements for uninterrupted power and water supply, security, sanitation, fire services, medicare at the venue during the Mela days.
In her welcome address, Dr. Kiran urged the students to lead a life of saint who lives for the welfare of others. She also stressed that this Mela is also a part of our one step towards nation building and inculcation of managerial, organizational and entrepreneur skills amongst the students.
A cultural programme was presented by the students of the college and artists of the Information Department, Jammu.
To make the event more attractive, various government and private schools and other organisations had set up joy rides magic show, cultural items, photo exhibitions and Bhajan Sandhya etc. inter-school dance competition, open song competition, baby show, BSF, CRPF, JKP Bands, Sham-e-Gazal, photo exhibition etc would be some other highlights of the Mela.
